Dinosaur Jr. seem to have accomplished what the Pixies either didn’t want to do or couldn’t do….maintain a lasting reconciliation. The 2007 album, Beyond was a critically lauded return to form and marked the first new Dino Jr. album with original members Murph, Lou Barlow and J. Mascis since 1988’s classic Bug

Mascis’ Fender Jazz Master induced melodic solo lines and high gain feedback drenched the Beyond album with signature Mascis churn while also allowing space for some well placed strings, Murph’s sure hand snare shots and Barlow’s chunky bass. The album immediately recalled Dino’s glory years while simultaneously bringing the band’s sonic footprint into the 21st century.

It appears that Barlow and Mascis’ well documented flame out is now history; let’s hope their current thaw sticks.

While Mascis’ familiar whine remains intact his hair is now snow white, creating an arresting image in live encounters. Word has it that the band are now working on a follow up to Beyond and will be doing some selected live dates kicking off in March.

Here’s the reformed Dinosaur Jr. performing  “This is all I came to do”
