Saw Adventureland over the weekend and liked it so much that I decided to add a new category of posts here, films. Adventureland owes a tip of the hat to Caddyshack, Risky Business, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and other 'coming of age' genre movies. The film takes place circa 1987 when our hero, a brainy high school graduate, learns his parents aren't going to bankroll his way into an Ivy League School. Oh, and that summer before college train trek adventure through Europe is also off.
So, after several failed job interviews for gainful employment to try and gather up some college tuition cash, the guy has to settle for a carny gig at the local amusement park, Adventureland. Suffice to say, the script is nimble and the acting is top notch. Kristin Steward turns in a superb performance as the troubled co-worker chick with a secret.
The soundtrack is also perfectly balanced and features authentic, well chosen period classic gems from the Replacements, Husker Du and Lou Reed.
